Rubber bands, also known as elastics, help to straighten the teeth during orthodontic treatment with braces.

When it comes to resolving bite-related problems and straightening teeth effectively, braces remain one of the most popular orthodontic solutions. They are suitable for children, teenagers and even adults. Braces involve the use of various components, each of which plays a role in moving the teeth into better positions over time. Rubber bands, also known as elastics, help to ensure correct tooth movement and improved jaw alignment — read on to find out how they work, and what you can do to look after them properly throughout your treatment…

What are rubber bands?

Braces are made up of two main components: brackets and wires. The wires work by moving the teeth, while the brackets, which are attached to the teeth, hold the wires in place. Together, the wires and brackets apply pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into new and improved positions over time. In some cases, your orthodontist may recommend that rubber bands are used as an additional component. These rubber bands are attached to the brackets with the help of very small hooks either vertically or diagonally, depending on your particular needs.

Although rubber bands can aid the alignment process, they are not necessary in every case. Your orthodontist will let you know if they are suitable for you, and will explain their function in detail to you if you need them.

What are the benefits of rubber bands?

It can be very beneficial to use rubber bands when you have braces because they apply extra pressure to the teeth. This means that the teeth are able to move into positions that may not otherwise be possible. In fact, rubber bands help to exert more precise pressure, and can speed up the treatment process quite considerably.

By applying additional pressure and tension to the teeth, rubber bands help to move the teeth efficiently into better positions. This helps to ensure highly effective and predictable results and can go a long way towards achieving a healthier, straighter and more beautiful smile in the long-term.

How do you take care of rubber bands?

If you decide to go ahead with orthodontic treatment in the form of braces, it is very important that you practise proper oral hygiene every day and that you keep the components of your braces as clean as possible. When it comes to taking care of your rubber bands specifically, it is advisable that you remove them every time that you eat, as well as when you brush and floss your teeth. You should also replace your rubber bands once a day in order to maintain optimal oral hygiene.

To prevent damage to your rubber bands (as well as the other components of your braces), it is best that you avoid foods that are particularly crunchy, sticky and hard. These include foods like whole nuts, popcorn, candy, and hard, raw vegetables. It is also advisable that you limit your consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks throughout your treatment with braces — this will help to keep issues like tooth decay and stains at bay and ensure that you maintain a healthy mouth throughout your orthodontic journey.
