Learn what to expect during your first visit at Straight Orthodontics.
Your first visit to our orthodontic office is an exciting time! It’s a chance for us to get acquainted, and for you to learn about the treatments and services we offer. When you walk in the door, you may notice that our office looks similar to your regular dentist’s office; what we do here, however, is different. It all starts with the initial consultation.
What to expect at your initial consultation
When you first arrive, you can check in with our friendly reception team. The appointment will take approximately 20 minutes, during which an orthodontic assistant will ask you some initial questions, and then Dr Lo will assess your teeth, jaws and face and will discuss his initial findings with you, including whether orthodontic treatment is warranted at this time. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and to outline anything that may concern you about your teeth and smile.
What to expect after your initial consultation
If orthodontic treatment is indicated at this time, diagnostic records (which may include models of the teeth, x-ray analysis and digital photographs of the face and teeth) will be required before treatment commences. These records are essential for final diagnosis and treatment planning.
Combined with the information gathered at your initial consultation, these diagnostic records assist the orthodontist to accurately diagnose your orthodontic issues and develop your personalised treatment plan.
It may be possible to take diagnostic records at the initial consultation if you wish, or alternatively a subsequent appointment may be made. There is a fee for diagnostic records which will be discussed with you at the initial consultation before proceeding. The fee is payable on the day the diagnostic records are taken.
After completing his analysis of the diagnostic records, Dr Lo will meet with you again to discuss your treatment options and explain the different types of treatment and next steps. We recommend that anyone involved in the treatment decision attend this informative appointment.
You may be shown a series of short animations illustrating the different treatment options being discussed, as well as a detailed explanation of Dr Lo’s findings. This discussion will include an exact treatment fee and an estimate of the treatment time needed to achieve the desired result. This appointment is a good time to highlight any questions you might have about treatment. There is no additional fee for this treatment planning discussion appointment.
We offer a range of extended payment plans – refer to the “financial” tab on this website or ask for further information when you come in.
In some cases, depending on the developmental stage of the teeth and jaws, treatment may not be recommended until later. If this is the case, we’ll advise you to return for a periodic check-up, until we determine that it’s the best time to start. Whether you’re starting now or later, this is the best time to ask questions about the process. We can talk about available treatment choices, answer general questions about what to expect at the different stages of the process, and discuss any of the following:
- Can orthodontic treatment benefit me or my child?
- What general procedures will be used to correct the problem?
- Are any options available, or recommended for my treatment?
- Should I get treatment now, or is it better to wait? Will tooth extraction be necessary?
- How much does treatment cost? Are payment plans available?
- How long do you expect treatment to take?
