Braces work by moving the teeth into the correct position.

If you are considering an orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering how braces work exactly. Traditional metal braces are a highly effective orthodontic option, and involve the use of brackets, wires, and elastic bands. Read on to find out how these components work together to shift the teeth into better positions over time…

How do braces move teeth?

Braces are made up of a number of components, including brackets, wires, and elastics. The brackets are bonded to the surface of the teeth, while wires place pressure on the teeth and jaw. Elastics are used to connect the brackets and wires. Together, all these components work together to put continuous pressure on the teeth, moving them into new positions. The shape of the jaw gradually adapts to the pressure exerted by the braces.

How are the brackets attached?

When you have your braces fitted, your orthodontist will clean and dry your teeth before applying the brackets with a special glue. Elastics are then placed around the brackets and work by increasing the pressure on the jaw. In some cases, spacers may be placed between the molars to increase the space at the back of the mouth, push the jaw forward and make room for your new braces.

The brackets are connected with the use of arch wires. These wires apply pressure to the teeth and are typically made from stainless steel, nickel titanium or copper titanium. Your orthodontist will let you know which material your wires are made from.

In some cases, your orthodontist may recommend that metal parts called buccal tubes are attached to your molars. These parts work by anchoring your braces at the back of your mouth and can be tightened and released as necessary. Sometimes, coil springs are attached to the arch wires — these components apply pressure between the teeth to add space and push them apart.

How long does treatment take?

The duration of your orthodontic treatment depends on several factors, including the extent of the issue that you are having resolved. Most patients typically wear braces for anytime between one and three years. Your orthodontist will let you know what to expect from your treatment when you come in for a consultation and guide you through the process.
