Signs that you might benefit from braces include crooked and crowded teeth.

Braces achieve very predictable and effective results for individuals who would like to straighten their teeth. Often, braces are recommended during childhood or the early teen years, but they are also available to adults who would like to improve the form and function of their teeth. If you suspect that you might be a candidate for braces, read on to find out what kinds of issues they can resolve and who is most suited to the treatment…

What are the signs you need braces?

The signs that one needs braces will depend on a number of factors, including age, overall oral health and aesthetic goals. For adults, some of the most common signs that braces may be necessary include having teeth that are crooked or crowded; frequently biting your tongue; and having difficulty flossing and brushing between crooked teeth. Adults who experience a fatigued jaw after chewing or a jaw that clicks when chewing may also benefit from orthodontic treatment.

In children, it can be difficult to tell if orthodontic treatment is necessary without a professional assessment. Crooked or crowded baby teeth, however, may be a sign that braces may be beneficial in the future. Other signs that your child may need braces include mouth-breathing; thumb-sucking; teeth that don’t align even when the mouth is shut; and being prone to biting the tongue or inside of the cheek accidentally.

When should you see an orthodontist?

If you are considering braces or any orthodontic treatment, we encourage you to come in and see us for a consultation so that we can discuss treatment options with you. Although early treatment is often best, it’s never too late to straighten your teeth.

If you never had the opportunity to get braces as a child or teenager, you might consider the treatment as an adult. In fact, more and more adults are seeking orthodontic solutions for issues such as crowding, crooked teeth and bite-related issues.

If you have a child, you should ideally arrange an orthodontic evaluation at around the age of seven years old. This allows your orthodontist to identify any issues early and to formulate a treatment plan for the future. Usually, orthodontic treatment begins anywhere between the ages of nine and 14 when all of the permanent teeth have come through.

What are the options?

Conventional metal braces remain an affordable and effective way to straighten the teeth. They are a popular treatment thanks to their reliability and ability to achieve excellent results even in complex cases. Conventional metal braces involve the use of components called brackets, which are bonded to the teeth, as well as archwires and elastic bands that help to move the teeth into new positions.

Ceramic braces are another popular choice. They work in the same way as conventional braces, but are made from clear or tooth-coloured ceramic material instead of metal. Ceramic braces are a great option for those who would prefer a discreet orthodontic treatment.

Although they are not suited to complex cases, clear aligners are also designed to straighten the teeth. They work by applying pressure to the teeth, gradually shifting them into new positions over time. They are made with clear, medical-grade plastic, which is very comfortable to wear and virtually invisible. This makes them a popular choice for adults and teens who don’t like the look of conventional braces.
