Ceramic Braces VS Invisalign

Discreet orthodontics – Ceramic Braces vs Invisalign. What’s the best option for you?

In today’s times, those seeking orthodontic treatment is far greater than ever before. Since many people are beginning to see the value of straighter teeth, many adults are finding themselves in the position of wanting to achieve a straighter smile. When someone mentions the word “braces” you may instantly picture a great big metal grin on a child – needless to say, many adults do not wish to be sporting this look! Fortunately, there are more discreet options such as ceramic braces and Invisalign. But how do you know which one is best for you?

Invisalign

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment which is virtually invisible – hence its name. It is a clear aligner tray that is placed over the teeth and applies gentle pressure to move the teeth into their correct places. Invisalign has the advantage of being able to move your teeth without the use of brackets and wires. This appliance is removable and can be removed should you have a special occasion or during meal times.

Every few weeks you will be given a new tray which is made slightly straighter than the last, gradually shifting your teeth into the ideal position by the end of treatment.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have brackets made of ceramic or porcelain, or in some cases plastic. The brackets can be clear or else coloured to be the same shade as your teeth. Thus, they usually blend in with your teeth much better than metal braces. Ceramic braces also aim to be discreet such as Invisalign, though since a wire is used, this type of orthodontic treatment is a little more noticeable than Invisalign. However, not as conspicuous as traditional braces.

Which is right for you?

Invisalign is great for those with mild to moderate overcrowding and spacing issues. For those who require more intense orthodontic treatment, ceramic braces are a far better option. Certain treatments require some tooth movements that clear aligners can’t do very well. Achieving the best results requires extensive knowledge of biomechanics and limitations of the system to design movements that will actually work. Even with that knowledge, correcting rotations, making teeth longer, making roots parallel and closing extraction spaces are much more efficiently achieved with brackets and wires.

In some cases, your orthodontist may even recommend using both! Certain adjustments may need to be made with ceramic braces and treatment can be completed with the use of Invisalign. This is all highly individual, however, and your orthodontist will need to have a good assessment of the position of your teeth to determine the best way forward for you.
