Clear aligners can resolve a range of orthodontic concerns, including some bite-related issues.
Clear aligners are an effective orthodontic option for people who would like to straighten their smile in a way that is both comfortable and discreet. It is important to note, however, that clear aligners are not suitable for more complex cases, and your orthodontist will let you know if an alternative treatment is more appropriate for you. So, what can clear aligners be used for? And are they right for you?
What is an overbite?
Sometimes referred to as ‘buck teeth’, an overbite occurs when the upper front teeth overlap with the lower front teeth. Depending on the severity of the overbite, it may be a cosmetic issue only. In some cases, however, an overbite can cause problems like jaw pain and wear and tear on the teeth.
An overbite can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics (which affect the shape and size of the jaw); overcrowding of the teeth; and missing teeth in the lower jaw. Certain early childhood habits can also contribute to an overbite — these include thumb-sucking, extensive use of a pacifier, tongue thrusting; and mouth breathing.
How can an overbite be resolved?
In the case of minor to moderate overbites, clear aligners may be a suitable treatment. Clear aligners work by exerting pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them into new positions over time. It is important to note, however, that severe overbites may need to be addressed with traditional metal or ceramic braces. Braces are attached to the teeth and help to shift the jaw into better alignment. Braces apply constant pressure on the teeth, which slowly moves them into better positions. They are not removable, which means that they are often the most efficient and effective treatment for overbites.
Whether you choose clear aligners or braces to resolve your overbite, your orthodontist is likely to recommend that you wear a retainer after your treatment is complete. Retainers are removable devices that help to maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment. By wearing your retainer as per your orthodontist’s instructions, it is possible to keep your teeth and jaw aligned and to prevent your overbite from returning.
What other issues can clear aligners resolve?
Clear aligners are an increasingly popular treatment, especially for adults and teens who are looking for a discreet orthodontic solution. They can be used to resolve a broad range of issues, including unwanted gaps between the teeth, crowding, and mild to moderate misalignment. Clear aligners can also often be used to address bite-related problems like open bite and cross bite, as well as excessive overjet.
If you are considering clear aligners but are not sure whether or not you are a suitable candidate, the best thing you can do is to see your orthodontist for a consultation. They will examine your mouth and jaw and let you know which treatment is best for you.
How can we help?
